The Maryland Agricultural Land Preservation Foundation parcel must consist of 50 acres, meet soils criteria, and be located outside of the 10 year water and sewer area.
The Maryland Agricultural Land Preservation Foundation was established in 1977 and is part of the Maryland Department of Agriculture. The Foundation purchases agricultural preservation easements that forever restrict development on prime farmland and woodland. The MALPF program is one of the most successful programs of its kind in the nation. Maryland has preserved in perpetuity more agricultural land than any other state in the country. The goal of the program is to preserve productive farmland, curb development, protect wildlife and enhance the water quality of the Chesapeake Bay and its tributaries.
Applications can be submitted to the Prince George’s Soil Conservation District. Once reviewed, the application goes through an approval process which includes the local Preservation Advisory Board, the County and finally the MALPF Board. The process takes about 18 to 24 months.
