A Rural Legacy parcel must consist of 50 acres and be located within the designated Rural Legacy area.
The goal of this program is to conserve in perpetuity land rich in agricultural, forestry, natural and cultural resources. Rural Legacy is a State funded program that invests in land conservation easements targeted to protect the most ecologically valuable properties most directly impacting the Chesapeake Bay. If conserved these properties will promote resource based economies, protect green belts and maintain the fabric of rural life as well as improve the health of the Chesapeake Bay.
Applications are submitted once a year through the District to the Maryland Department of Natural Resources. The application process takes about 18 to 24 months.
