RURAL LEGACY PROGRAM

 

Purpose
Through the use of easements and fee estates, the program enhances agriculture, natural resources, forestry and environmental protection. The purpose of the Rural Legacy Program is to protect
and conserve strategic natural resources, large contiguous tracts of land and other areas from sprawl development.

Qualifying Criteria
L
ocation: Property must be located in the approved Rural Legacy Area for Prince George’s County. This area encompasses most of the land East of Rt. 301 and Croom Rd. to the Patuxent River. The area begins just north of Rt. 4 and continues south to Chalk Point in the Aquasco area. For a detailed map visit the Rural Legacy web-site. www.dnr.state.md.us/rurallegacy/

Size: Properties of 50 acres or greater acres are eligible


Application Process
The Soil Conservation will prepare the application for interested landowners. The application is then submitted to Rural Legacy staff at the Department of Natural Resources and reviewed.

Payment Option

           Lump Sum Cash Payment
             
 A landowner will receive a lump sum cash payment for
              
the purchase of their development rights. 

Childrens Lots
Lots may be excluded at landowners’ discretion, but will effect the value of the easement and are subject to the Rural Legacy Board approval.  

Prince George's County Participation
As of July 1, 2007, three parcels for 250 acres have been submitted and are going through the easement acquisition process. The District is currently working on an application for four parcels totaling approximately 500 acres. This application will be submitted in January 2008.
